Hair loss touches something deeply personal, and for many people finding the right answer takes time, research, and a practitioner willing to listen. At Regener8 Aesthetics in Selly Oak, Birmingham, we offer non-surgical hair restoration using PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), an evidence-based approach that works with your body's own biology. We welcome clients of all backgrounds, and offer consultations in English, Farsi and Russian.

Hair loss is far more common than many people realise, and it takes many forms. Before considering any treatment, it is important to understand the underlying cause, because different types of hair loss respond differently to different interventions. At a consultation, your hair and scalp will be assessed and your medical history discussed to help establish what may be driving the change you are experiencing.
The most common form of hair loss in men, androgenetic alopecia is driven by a genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone. This causes progressive miniaturisation of the hair follicle over time, typically producing a receding hairline or thinning at the crown. It can begin as early as the late teens and tends to follow predictable patterns. Early intervention gives the best opportunity to slow the process, as follicles that have been dormant for a long time are less likely to respond to treatment.
Female pattern hair loss also has a hormonal and genetic basis, though it typically presents differently to male pattern baldness, most often as a diffuse thinning across the top of the scalp rather than hairline recession. It is more common after menopause, though it can occur at any age. Many women find that hair loss is distressing in ways that are not always well understood, and it is something we discuss with sensitivity and care.
The transition into and through menopause brings a significant shift in oestrogen levels, which plays a role in maintaining hair growth cycles. Many women notice increased shedding or a reduction in hair volume during perimenopause and menopause. This is a well-recognised cause of hair loss and one of the more common presentations we see in clinic.
PCOS involves an imbalance in reproductive hormones that can, in some cases, contribute to hair thinning and loss on the scalp, alongside other androgenic symptoms. If PCOS is a known or suspected factor, it is important that this is discussed at the consultation stage so that a holistic picture can be formed.
Many women experience a period of pronounced hair shedding in the weeks and months following childbirth. This is related to the hormonal shift after delivery and the re-entering of a large number of follicles into the shedding phase at the same time. In most cases this resolves on its own, though PRP may be considered if the shedding has been prolonged or more significant than expected. Suitability is assessed at the consultation.
Significant physical or psychological stress, including illness, surgery, emotional trauma, dramatic dietary change or chronic stress, can push a disproportionate number of hair follicles into the resting (telogen) phase simultaneously. The result is a diffuse shedding that may become noticeable several weeks or months after the triggering event. Identifying and addressing the underlying stress factor, where possible, is an important part of any treatment approach.
Both an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) and an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can contribute to hair loss. If thyroid function has not been recently assessed and hair loss is a concern, it is worth discussing this with your GP, as addressing thyroid function is essential before aesthetic treatments are likely to be effective.
Deficiencies in iron, ferritin, vitamin D, zinc and B vitamins are among the nutritional factors associated with hair loss. If these have not been ruled out, we may suggest that bloodwork is reviewed as part of the broader picture before committing to a treatment plan.
A number of commonly prescribed medications can cause hair thinning as a side effect. If you are taking regular medication, this is something we discuss at the consultation to help ensure that any treatment approach is appropriate and realistic in context.
Important note:
Understanding the underlying cause of hair loss is an essential first step. PRP hair restoration may be a suitable option for certain types and stages of hair loss, but it is not a universal solution. Suitability is always assessed individually at the consultation appointment.
PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. It is a treatment that uses a concentration of growth factors and proteins derived from your own blood to support the health and activity of hair follicles in the scalp.
A small volume of blood is drawn from the arm, in the same way as a routine blood test. This sample is placed into a centrifuge, a machine that spins the blood at high speed to separate its components. The spinning process isolates the platelet-rich plasma, which contains a higher concentration of growth factors than found in standard blood.
The prepared PRP is then carefully injected into the areas of the scalp where hair thinning or loss has been identified. The growth factors released from the platelets are understood to support follicular health, stimulate dormant or weakened follicles, and promote a more active growth phase.
Because PRP is derived entirely from your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction is considered very low. The process takes approximately 60–90 minutes in total, including preparation and treatment time.
PRP hair restoration is not a cure for hair loss, and it does not work for every type or cause. It is most likely to be considered where follicles are still present but are inactive or weakened, rather than where follicles have been completely lost. For this reason, earlier intervention tends to offer a more favourable outlook. Results vary between individuals, and honest, realistic expectations are discussed at the consultation. Individual outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
PRP may be worth considering for people who are in the earlier stages of hair loss, where follicular activity is still present. It may also appeal to those who prefer to explore non-surgical options, or who have not seen satisfactory results from topical treatments such as minoxidil.
PRP is less likely to be suitable where hair follicles are no longer present, where the cause of hair loss is active and unaddressed, or where certain medical conditions are present. This is why a thorough consultation and honest assessment are essential before proceeding. We will always be transparent about what is and is not likely to be helpful in your individual case.

Is PRP hair restoration painful?
Most clients find the treatment manageable. A topical numbing cream is applied to the scalp beforehand to minimise discomfort during the injection phase. Some clients experience a mild sensation of pressure or warmth, but significant pain is uncommon. Your comfort is discussed and managed throughout the session.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on the individual, the cause of hair loss, and how the scalp responds. Typically a course of three to four sessions is recommended, spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by a maintenance interval. Your full treatment plan is discussed at the consultation.
How long before I see results?
Hair growth is gradual and individual results vary. Some clients notice improvements in hair texture and reduced shedding within the first couple of months. More visible improvement in density may take three to six months. Results depend on the cause and extent of hair loss and cannot be guaranteed.
Is PRP suitable for female hair loss?
PRP may be a suitable option for some women experiencing hair thinning, including those with female pattern hair loss or hair loss related to hormonal changes, stress or postpartum shedding. Suitability is always assessed at the consultation. PRP is not appropriate for all causes of hair loss, and this is discussed honestly at the appointment.
