The jawline is one of the most structurally defining features of the face. Whether someone is looking to achieve a softer, more oval facial shape, or they are waking up each morning with a sore jaw and worn-down teeth, masseter jaw slimming injections have become one of the most requested treatments at aesthetic clinics across Birmingham and beyond. At Regener8 Aesthetics in Selly Oak, we see clients travelling from Edgbaston, Harborne, Moseley, Bournville, Stirchley and further afield for this treatment, many of whom have been living with the discomfort of bruxism for years without realising there is a straightforward, non-surgical option available to them.
This article explains everything you need to know: what the masseter muscle is, how jaw slimming injections work, what to expect on the day, and how to decide whether the treatment is right for you.
What Is the Masseter Muscle?
The masseter is one of the primary muscles of mastication: the group of muscles responsible for chewing. It sits at the angle of the lower jaw, connecting the cheekbone (zygomatic arch) to the lower jawbone (mandible). When you clench your teeth and place your fingers just in front of your earlobes, you will feel the masseter contract beneath your fingertips. It is a powerful muscle: it generates more force per unit of cross-sectional area than virtually any other skeletal muscle in the body.
In most people, the masseter is an unobtrusive background player, it does its job during meals and is otherwise unremarkable. However, in some individuals the muscle is particularly well developed, either through genetics, habitual jaw clenching, or a condition known as bruxism (teeth grinding). A hypertrophic (or enlarged) masseter creates a square, angular quality at the lower face. For some this is a feature they are entirely comfortable with; for others it is something they would prefer to change.
The masseter is a large chewing muscle located at the angle of the jaw. When it is enlarged (through genetics, clenching, or teeth grinding) it creates a wider, squarer lower face and can cause significant jaw discomfort. Botulinum toxin injections into this muscle can reduce both its bulk and its activity.
Why Do People Have Masseter Injections?
Aesthetic Jaw Slimming
The most sought-after outcome from masseter treatment is a more slender, refined jawline. A square jaw can result from a genuinely wide bone structure, but it can equally be the result of an enlarged masseter muscle that adds width just above and around the jawline itself. When the muscle is treated, its bulk gradually reduces over several weeks, revealing a softer facial contour, often described as more oval or heart-shaped.
This is not about removing bone or dramatically altering facial structure. It is a subtle softening that many clients describe as their face looking "more like them": less heavy, less tense. The change tends to be gradual and natural-looking, which is precisely why the treatment has remained popular: it does not produce the artificially altered appearance that some people associate with more invasive procedures.
Jaw slimming is popular across all genders. Female clients often describe wanting a softer, less angular jaw; male clients sometimes seek a degree of reduction to achieve better facial balance without losing the strength of their jawline altogether. The treatment is tailored to each person's anatomy and goals.
Bruxism and Teeth Grinding
Bruxism is the involuntary grinding or clenching of the teeth, typically during sleep. It is more common than many people realise. Over time, bruxism causes significant tooth wear, chip damage, increased dental sensitivity, and can lead to problems within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the hinge joint connecting the lower jaw to the skull. Symptoms extend beyond the mouth: persistent headaches on waking, jaw ache throughout the day, facial tension, and even earache are all commonly associated with habitual grinding.
Dental night guards provide a protective barrier for the teeth, but they do not address the underlying muscular force that causes the problem. Jaw slimming injections work differently: by reducing the contractile force of the masseter, they lessen the pressure applied to the teeth and joints during grinding episodes. Many clients find that their jaw ache, morning headaches, and facial tension ease considerably within a few weeks of treatment, often before the aesthetic slimming effect becomes fully visible.
How Does the Treatment Work?
Botulinum toxin is a purified protein that temporarily interrupts the nerve signal that causes a muscle to contract. When a small, precise amount is injected into the masseter, it does not paralyse the muscle completely; it simply reduces the strength of its contraction. The muscle can still function normally for everyday activities such as eating and speaking, but the forceful clenching or grinding that characterises bruxism is significantly dampened.
Over the weeks following treatment, the masseter receives less intense signals to contract at full force. As with any muscle that is used less strenuously, it gradually reduces in size. This is the mechanism behind the slimming effect: it is not an immediate or dramatic change, but a progressive, natural-looking reduction in muscle bulk that typically becomes visible from four to six weeks after the appointment.
The treatment is delivered via a series of small injections placed directly into the masseter muscle on each side of the face. The number of injection points and the total amount used will be determined at your consultation based on the size and activity of your masseter, and what you are hoping to achieve: aesthetic slimming, functional relief, or both.
Our consultation fee is £25 and is fully redeemable against any treatment booked within 30 days. Consultations are available in English, Farsi and Russian at our clinic in Selly Oak, Birmingham.

What Happens at the Appointment?
Every masseter treatment at Regener8 Aesthetics begins with a consultation, either at a dedicated pre-treatment appointment or as part of the same visit for returning clients whose suitability has already been established. During the consultation, your practitioner will ask about your medical history, any medications or supplements you take, your goals, and whether you have experienced symptoms of bruxism or TMJ discomfort. They will assess the size and tone of your masseter by asking you to clench your teeth gently, and will discuss what results are realistic for your anatomy.
On the day of treatment, the area will be cleansed thoroughly. Depending on your sensitivity, a topical numbing cream may be applied beforehand, though most clients find this unnecessary as the injections are brief and well-tolerated. The practitioner will mark the injection sites on the skin and deliver a series of precise, small injections into the masseter on each side. The procedure itself typically takes no more than ten to fifteen minutes.
Immediately afterwards, you may notice minor redness or slight swelling at the injection sites, both of which resolve within a few hours. There is no meaningful downtime. Most clients return to work and normal activities immediately. You will be advised to avoid vigorous facial massage, extreme heat such as saunas or sunbeds, and strenuous exercise for the remainder of that day. Eating and drinking can continue as normal.
A follow-up appointment at two to four weeks allows your practitioner to assess how the muscle has responded and whether any minor refinement is needed. This is included as standard in responsible practice.
The appointment is straightforward and relatively brief. A consultation assessment is followed by cleansing, optional topical numbing, and a small number of precise injections into the masseter on each side. There is no downtime and most clients return to their day immediately. A review at two to four weeks is recommended to assess the response and make any adjustments.
Results: How Long and How Noticeable?
The slimming effect on the jawline does not appear overnight. In the first week or two, many clients notice that the jaw feels less tense; the functional relief from reduced clenching force often precedes the visible aesthetic change. The muscle begins to reduce in bulk gradually from around four weeks, with the most noticeable slimming effect typically visible at six to eight weeks after treatment.
How dramatic the change appears depends on how enlarged the masseter was before treatment, and what your underlying bone structure is like. Clients with a significantly hypertrophic masseter tend to see the most pronounced change. Those with a moderately active muscle may notice a subtler refinement; their face looks less heavy, their jawline looks more defined, but friends and family may not be able to identify exactly what has changed.
Results typically last between four and six months. As the effect of the treatment wears off, the muscle gradually returns to its previous level of activity and, over time, to its previous size. However, with repeated treatments, the masseter tends to respond more readily and may remain reduced in bulk for longer intervals between sessions. Many clients who initially require treatment every four to five months find that, after a year or two, they can maintain their results with less frequent appointments.
For bruxism, the functional benefits (reduced grinding force, less jaw ache on waking, fewer tension headaches) often track closely with the duration of the aesthetic results. When the treatment begins to wear off, symptoms may gradually return, signalling that a top-up is due.
Is It Right for Me?
Masseter jaw slimming injections are suitable for most adults who have a well-developed masseter muscle and are seeking either aesthetic jaw refinement or relief from bruxism and associated symptoms. There is no specific age requirement, and the treatment is appropriate for all skin types and tones.
The treatment is not suitable for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding, those with certain neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis, or those with a known allergy to botulinum toxin or any of its components. It is also inadvisable for anyone who has had recent facial surgery in the area, or those taking certain blood-thinning medications or supplements, as these can increase the risk of bruising. Your practitioner will review all of these factors at consultation.
It is worth noting that masseter treatment addresses muscle bulk, not bone structure. If a wide or angular jawline is primarily the result of a wide mandibular bone rather than an enlarged masseter, the results will be more limited. An honest assessment at consultation will help set appropriate expectations.
For people with bruxism who have significant TMJ symptoms, jaw slimming injections can be a helpful part of a broader management plan, but they work best alongside appropriate dental review, stress management, and any other recommendations made by a qualified professional familiar with your case.
