Common Causes of Hair Loss and Thinning

Hair loss has many possible causes, and they are not all treated the same way. Identifying the likely cause is the single most important step, because it determines whether aesthetic treatment is appropriate or whether medical investigation is needed first.

This overview covers the most common causes we assess.

Genetic and hormonal causes

The most common cause of gradual thinning is androgenetic (pattern) hair loss, driven by inherited sensitivity to hormones. In men this typically shows as hairline recession and crown thinning; in women, as diffuse thinning across the top with a preserved hairline. Hormonal changes, such as around menopause or after pregnancy, can also affect hair.

Stress, illness and nutrition

Significant stress, illness, surgery, rapid weight loss and nutritional deficiencies can push follicles into the resting phase, causing a temporary increase in shedding known as telogen effluvium. This usually appears a few months after the trigger and is often reversible once the cause is addressed.

Other causes

Autoimmune conditions such as alopecia areata, prolonged tension from tight hairstyles (traction alopecia), and scalp conditions can all cause hair loss. Some causes require medical rather than aesthetic management, which is why assessment matters.

  • Telogen effluvium
  • Alopecia areata
  • Traction alopecia
  • Nutritional or medical factors

Why assessment is essential

Because the causes are so varied, an honest assessment is essential before any treatment. Where aesthetic treatment is appropriate, it is delivered through the Hair Restoration Programme; where it is not, we will say so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can hair loss be reversed?

It depends entirely on the cause. Some causes, such as telogen effluvium, are often temporary; others, such as pattern hair loss, are progressive and managed rather than cured. Assessment clarifies what is realistic.

When should I seek help for hair loss?

Sudden, patchy, or sustained hair loss, or a widening parting, is worth a professional assessment, as is any hair loss that is affecting you. Early assessment gives more options.
