Aesthetic clinics are not always designed with neurodivergent people in mind. Unfamiliar environments, unexpected sensations, social uncertainty, and a sense that you should just know how things work, these can all make what should be a positive, self-caring experience feel unnecessarily difficult. At Regener8 Aesthetics in Selly Oak, Birmingham, we work with clients from across the city and surrounding areas, including Edgbaston, Harborne, Bournville, Moseley, and Stirchley, and we understand that a truly patient-centred approach means meeting each person where they are.
This guide is written for anyone who identifies as autistic, has ADHD, lives with sensory processing differences, or simply finds that standard clinical environments feel a little overwhelming. It covers what to expect, how to prepare, and how we work to make your visit as comfortable as possible. If you are an ally reading this on behalf of someone you care for, we hope it helps too.
Why the Consultation Environment Matters
The environment in which a consultation takes place shapes the entire experience. Noise, lighting, the pace of conversation, how questions are asked, how much time you are given to respond, all of these things can either help a person feel safe and informed, or leave them feeling pressured and overwhelmed before any treatment has even been discussed.
For neurodivergent clients, this is not a matter of preference. It is a matter of whether informed consent is genuinely possible. If someone is in sensory overload, or does not feel psychologically safe enough to ask questions or express hesitation, they cannot make a truly informed decision about their care. That is a problem, not just for the client, but for any practitioner who takes their ethics seriously.
Our practitioner has a clinical healthcare background, which shapes the way every consultation at Regener8 is structured. Appointments are led by the client's pace, communication style, and comfort, not by a script or a treatment menu. We are not here to sell you a procedure. We are here to listen, explain clearly, and give you the space to decide what is right for you.
A consultation is only meaningful if you feel genuinely comfortable to ask questions, express doubts, and take your time. Our patient-centred approach means we adapt to how you communicate, not the other way around.
At our neurodiversity-friendly aesthetic clinic in Birmingham, we recognise that inclusivity is not just a statement, it is a set of practical commitments that are embedded in every interaction from the moment you get in touch with us.
Common Concerns Neurodivergent Clients Have Before Their First Appointment
Many clients tell us they almost did not book, not because they were unsure about the treatment, but because they were unsure about the experience itself. These are some of the concerns we hear most often, and which we want to address directly.
Not knowing the unwritten rules
Clinics can feel like social environments where everyone else seems to know how things work. Where do you sit? Who do you speak to first? Are there forms to fill in? We make the process explicit from the start, you will know exactly what to expect at each step, and you can ask us to explain anything in a different way if something is not clear.
Sensory discomfort during treatment
Many aesthetic treatments involve touch, needles, sounds, smells, and textures. For clients with heightened sensory sensitivity, this can feel like a significant barrier. We discuss sensory considerations openly before beginning, and we never proceed without talking through what you will feel and hear at each stage.
Being judged or dismissed
Some clients worry that mentioning a neurodivergent identity will change how they are treated, that they will be patronised, or that their aesthetic goals will not be taken seriously. You are here because you want to look after yourself. That is enough. We treat every client as a capable adult with their own valid reasons for being here.
Feeling pressured to decide quickly
There is never any expectation to make a decision on the day. If you want to go away and think about a treatment, return with more questions, or simply use the consultation to gather information with no commitment either way, that is entirely fine.
Communication difficulties
Whether you find it difficult to maintain eye contact, process verbal information quickly, or express yourself fluently in a clinical setting, we can adjust how we communicate. Written summaries, extra processing time, or simply a slower, quieter conversation, tell us what helps and we will work to that.
How We Approach Neurodivergent-Friendly Consultations at Regener8
Our approach is not a separate process for neurodivergent clients, it is how we consult with everyone, because it happens to be the most respectful and effective way to practise. These are the principles that guide every appointment.
Unhurried appointments
We do not overbook. Your consultation time is protected, and there is no sense that we need to move quickly. If you need more time than expected, we find a way to accommodate that.
Plain, direct communication
We explain things straightforwardly and check that what we have said has been understood, without making that check feel condescending. If jargon is unavoidable, we explain it. If you prefer written information, we can provide it.
No unsolicited touch
We explain exactly what we are about to do before we do it. We ask permission before touching, and we pause if you ask us to. Your physical boundaries are respected at all times.
A calm physical environment
Our clinic in Selly Oak is a small, boutique setting, deliberately different from a busy, high-stimulation salon. We keep background noise low and avoid unnecessary movement or interruption during consultations.
Attentive, patient-centred listening
Our practitioner's clinical healthcare background means they are attentive to non-verbal cues as well as what you say explicitly. If something seems to be causing discomfort, we will check in, not assume everything is fine because you have not said otherwise.
Our consultation fee is £25, fully redeemable against any treatment booked within 30 days. Consultations available in English, Farsi and Russian. You are welcome to bring a support person.
Finance available, subject to approval, via our Payl8r finance partner.
Sensory Considerations During Treatment
Aesthetic treatments involve physical sensations that can feel different to different people. For clients with sensory processing differences, these experiences are worth discussing before you commit to anything. Below we outline what is typically involved in some of our most popular treatments, and how we adapt where we can.
Needle-based treatments
Anti-wrinkle injections, Profhilo, PRP, and Lumi Eyes all involve fine needles. The sensation is brief, most clients describe it as a small pinch, but we recognise that anticipating a needle is often more distressing than the needle itself. We narrate each step as we go, so there are no surprises. Topical anaesthetic cream is available if you would like it, and we are always willing to take breaks between injection sites.
Microneedling
Microneedling involves a device passing over the skin with a buzzing sound and a scratching or warm sensation. We apply numbing cream before the procedure, and we explain the sounds you will hear before we start. If you would prefer music or quiet, we can discuss that too.
Lighting and positioning
Some treatments require you to lie back under bright clinical lighting. We keep lighting to the minimum necessary and can often adjust the angle. If lying flat is difficult for sensory or physical reasons, let us know and we will see how we can adapt.
Smells and products
Clinical products have a mild medicinal scent. If scent sensitivity is a concern for you, mention it when you book and we can let you know what you will encounter and whether alternatives exist.
You can ask us to pause, stop, or slow down at any point during a treatment. No treatment continues past your comfort level. We agree on communication preferences, including any signals you would like to use, before we begin.
Preparing for Your Appointment: Practical Tips
Preparation can make a significant difference to how manageable an appointment feels. Here are some practical steps that our clients have found helpful.
- Contact us in advance. Send a WhatsApp message or note in your booking to let us know anything that would help. You do not have to disclose a diagnosis, simply sharing your preferences is enough.
- Ask for written information beforehand. If you would like to know exactly what will happen at your appointment before you arrive, ask us and we will send a summary. Reading ahead can reduce uncertainty significantly.
- Bring a support person. You are welcome to bring a trusted friend, family member, or support worker. They can ask questions on your behalf, help you process information, or simply be a familiar presence.
- Visit us at a quieter time. If crowds or busyness are a concern, ask about our quieter appointment slots. We do not run a busy waiting room, but knowing the time of day can still help.
- Write your questions down. Having a list removes the pressure of having to remember everything in the moment. We will work through your questions at whatever pace feels comfortable.
- Plan for how you will feel afterwards. Even a straightforward consultation can be tiring if you find social or clinical settings draining. Give yourself space to decompress after your visit.
- Let us know your communication preferences. If you prefer direct rather than indirect language, or need longer processing time, or find certain types of questions harder to answer quickly, tell us. We adapt.
You Are Always in Control
Control over the process stays with you at every stage, and this matters to every client we see. For neurodivergent clients especially, knowing this from the outset can change how an appointment feels entirely. It is not a courtesy we offer; it is the foundation of ethical aesthetic practice.
Consent at Regener8 is not a single form you sign at the start and forget. It is an ongoing conversation. We check in during treatments, we respond to your cues, and we stop immediately if you signal that something is not right. You can change your mind about a treatment at any point, before, during, or even after a consultation, and that will not change the quality of care we offer you.
We also recognise that communication looks different for different people. If speaking up in the moment is difficult for you, we encourage you to agree on a signal with us before we begin, a raised hand, a word, anything that feels natural. We take all signals equally seriously.
Aesthetic care should feel like something you choose, not something you endure. If a previous clinic experience has left you with anxiety about appointments, we hope that coming to Regener8 can offer a different experience, one where being thorough, unhurried, and genuinely attentive is simply how we work.
